One of the most common mistakes homeowners make? Choosing a light that's too small for the room — or one that overwhelms it. Here's a simple guide to getting the size right, every time.
Why size matters
A fixture that's too small gets lost in the space, making the room feel incomplete. One that's too large dominates everything else, throwing off the entire visual balance. Getting the size right transforms a room from ordinary to thoughtfully designed.
The simple formula for hanging pendants and chandeliers
Add the room's length and width (in feet). Convert that sum to inches — that's your ideal fixture diameter.
Example: A 12ft × 14ft living room → 12 + 14 = 26 → aim for about 26 inches in diameter.
For rooms with very high ceilings (10ft or more), add 3–6 inches to the diameter for better visual proportion.
For dining room chandeliers
Choose a fixture that's about ½ to ⅔ the width of your dining table.
Example: A 48-inch wide table → choose a chandelier 24–32 inches wide.
Hang it 30–36 inches above the table surface for the ideal height — close enough to feel intimate, high enough not to block sightlines.
For bedside lamps
The bottom of the lampshade should sit roughly at eye level when you're sitting in bed — about 22–26 inches from the top of the mattress.
For wall sconces
Place them 60–66 inches from the floor, or at eye level for the average person. In hallways, space them 8–10 feet apart for even illumination.
Quick Tip:
When in doubt, size up. A slightly larger fixture feels intentional and dramatic. Too small just looks like a mistake.
